The Importance of Values...

As Bill Montgomery once said, “One of the most important things in life is to decide what is the most important thing.” Values represent the things that matter the most. Values are like fingerprints. Elvis once said, “Nobody’s are the same, but you leave ‘em all over everything you do.”

You can tell what a person does or does not value by the way they treat or even greet other people. You can tell what a person values by the way they dress and how they communicate with others; by the way they handle stress or difficult situations. Maybe a person values peace-making at all costs and totally avoids conflicts. If the person values politeness or courtesy it will show in their behavior. If a person values service for example, he/she will probably volunteer to help others. If a person values honesty or integrity, that person will always keep their word. You can count on good ole Joe or Sarah. They always keep their word.

Anita Roddick once said if you think you are too small or insignificant to make a difference, then you have never been in a bed with a mosquito. I like that. It reminds me of the story I heard about a young man who had Downs syndrome. This young man was a bagger at a local grocery store. He had a heart to help people and wanted to make a difference in life, so he decided that he would cut out inspirational quotes from the newspaper and put a quote in each of his customer’s bag. Every night when he got home from work, he would ask his dad to help him cut out quotes from the newspaper. At the store the next day, he would place a quote in each customers’ bag. Well, it didn’t take long for this young man to be the most popular bagger in the store. Lines would form just to have him bag your groceries. In fact, one woman would frequent the store daily, not because she needed groceries, but because she wanted the inspirational quote.

Make A Living or Make A Life?...

In a sociological study with 50 people in their nineties they were asked one question. If you had the chance to live your life over how would you live it differently?. Believe it or not, there were three consistent answers. If I had to do it all over again I would reflect more, risk more and I would do more things that would live on after I am dead. How interesting! None of those answers were about making money or surviving

What makes a good leader?

1 – A Visionary
A good leader knows where they are headed and has a plan and intentionally works that plan.

2 – A Good Communicator
A good leader just doesn’t talk at or talk down but talks with a person.  A good leader also masters the art of listening and does not run from or avoid conflict.

3 – A Person of Integrity
A leader keeps their word and honors their commitments. They say what they mean and mean what they say.

4 – Knows how to delegate
A good leader recognizes that micro-managing is a death sentence to any organization.  An effective leader leads and allows others to flourish in their abilities and giftings.

The Power of Today...

Corita Kent once said “Life is a succession of moments. To live each one is to succeed.” I would have to agree. The problem comes in implementing this great advice. To squeeze the most out of life and the moments of life is not something most of us are accustomed to do. We often find it difficult to be fully engaged in the moment, because we are so distracted or bogged down with things on our “to do” list. Learning to live in the moment seems like a luxury or even a waste of time.
