“Teach us to number our days alright, that me may gain a heart of wisdom.” Ps 90:12
Why does it take tragic and major life events to wake us up to what is really important in life? Maybe it is human nature. Yesterday, we received word that a young man we knew had been killed in an automobile accident. Suddenly, the world stops and all the questions flood your mind. Why and why now? What a tragedy, a young man in his twenties, engaged to be married gone from this life and the ones he loved. Once again life has a way of waking us from our slumber and indifference and reminding us what is really important and how fragile life really is.
I believe the Psalmist has it right. Wisdom comes from having an appreciation of the value of the time that we have been given and the responsibility and stewardship that goes along with the number of our days. The wise one knows that life is short. He/she knows that life is precious, fragile and must be handled with care.
Teach us to number our days so we do not live life with regret. Teach us to number our days so we do not waste another minute on trivial and meaningless pursuits, discussions or arguments. Teach us to number our days so we will make a difference in this life. Teach us to number our days so we can explore, create and move on with our dreams. Teach us to number our days because the reality is tomorrow may never come. Teach us to number our days so we can enjoy and savor every moment and relationship that this wonderful life offers us. Most importantly, teach us to number our days that we may be better people, stronger people with a heart of wisdom.
