Many years ago, James Allen wrote the very popular book, “As A Man Thinketh.” In this book he states, “All that a man achieves and all that he fails to achieve is the direct result of his own thoughts.” That’s a very powerful statement! According to Allen, where we are in life is in direct proportion to our thoughts. So if you have a question about your progress in life maybe you should ask yourself what are my thoughts like?

Behavioral scientists now say that most people entertain about 600 negative thoughts a day. No wonder so many are having a bad day and are not happy with their lives. With that much negativity to contend with in any given day, it’s a wonder anyone gets anything done. On the flip side, just think about what might happen if we had a flood of positive thoughts bombarding our minds each and every day? Can we? Is it possible?

We can change our thinking and therefore change our lives, but with everything in life, intentionality is the key. We can be intentional about feeding our minds with positive messages or be passive and let old messages and tapes we have listened to all our lives continue to take us down a destructive path. Here are four things to consider about moving your thinking in a different direction:

1. Many of your thoughts come from your own inner self-talk. Tune into your self-talk. What is your self-talk like? Is it negative about yourself or others? Do you put yourself down, call yourself names? Do you hear others calling you names? Are you down a lot? What are you really thinking? Tune in!
2. Negative self-talk? Ask yourself what are the underlying belief systems that I believe? What message or messages am I buying into? Are they true or false?
3. What is the real truth? What is more realistic and reasonable?
4. Once you know what the truth is, how can you change your self-talk? What is a new script for you that would be more beneficial? What positive affirmations and truths will you feed your mind? What will you begin to focus on?

You can change your thinking and change your life. You can change gears mentally but it requires some effort. Many times we have to break bad habits and too often our negativity is a cloak that we have become all too comfortable in. If you will take the time to tune in to your inner world and consider what you are really believe and will replace, the negative thoughts with more positive ones, you will find that by changing your thinking one thought at a time, you really are changing your life!
