It seems most very day when you turn on the news there is some kind of bad news. Our economy seems out of control and so do people. Not too long ago, in a town not too far from me, a man walks into a nursing home and killed eight elderly people. Who does those kinds of things and what has gone wrong with our world? It’s one thing to have anger and even rage and quite another to let that anger and rage get so out of control that innocent lives are destroyed.
Sometimes I wonder if all the bad news that we listen to day after day isn’t making us all a little crazy? If we are not careful, over time, we become conditioned by what we hear. Our hearts take it in and slowly we become despondent or afraid or anxious. We begin to believe maybe the sky really is falling. Maybe we are heading towards economic collapse. We find that we don’t want to do the things we used to do or go where we used to go. We are afraid to spend money. We are afraid to make any changes. We wake up one day and realize that something has changed and we are not as happy as we used to be.
Maybe it’s time to hear something different. Maybe it’s time to turn off the news, flip the channel and take a sabbatical. What we hear affects and impacts what we believe in a powerful way. If all we hear is negativity, at some point our minds will agree with that information and it will affect the way we think. So my advice is turn off the bad news and better yet get some good news into your life.
Put back some joy into your life. Joy does not have to be expensive. When was the last time you really had fun? Most of us are way too serious for our own good. I recently read children laugh 400 times a day and adults only laugh 15 times a day. That, my friend, is a sad commentary on adulthood. We have a lot of catching up to do!
So if you find that you are anxious, fearful or even somewhat depressed ask yourself -what are you hearing and where is your focus? If you all you hear is bad news, at some point you are going to focus on what is wrong, what is missing and what is lacking. You are going to become fearful, discouraged and maybe even a bit depressed. There is a better life for you. Turn off the news, play a little, laugh some more and get your life back!
