“Teach us to number our days alright, that me may gain a heart of wisdom.” Ps 90:12

Why does it take tragic and major life events to wake us up to what is really important in life? Maybe it is human nature. Yesterday, we received word that a young man we knew had been killed in an automobile accident. Suddenly, the world stops and all the questions flood your mind. Why and why now? What a tragedy, a young man in his twenties, engaged to be married gone from this life and the ones he loved. Once again life has a way of waking us from our slumber and indifference and reminding us what is really important and how fragile life really is.

I received an Easter ecard from a Facebook friend.  I have never met this person face to face but it really touched me in a profound way.  I am reminded once again that often it is not the big things in life that impact people as much as the small behind the scenes gestures of kindness and love.  I believe these small acts and gestures really do make a difference and make the world a better place one small act at a time.  Mother Teresa said “we can do no great things, only small things with great love.”  I think she was right!

The Four P’s of Leadership...

What does it take to become a great leader? No doubt one could list many components and qualities of a great leader, but there seems to be a pattern of qualities that emerge over and over again in great leaders. I call them the four P’s of leadership. They are: Perspective, Persistence, Patience, and Preparation.

Perspective – Life is always about perspective. At the end of the day, what matters is how a person views the circumstances in their life. One person sees a glass half empty and another sees it half full. One person views obstacles and another sees challenges or growth opportunities to overcome. A great leader learns to control the one thing they can control and that is their own thinking and perspective. A great leader learns how to control their internal world in order to make a difference and affect the outside world.

Anita Roddick once said if you think you are too small or insignificant to make a difference, then you have never been in a bed with a mosquito. I like that. It reminds me of the story I heard about a young man who had Downs syndrome. This young man was a bagger at a local grocery store. He had a heart to help people and wanted to make a difference in life, so he decided that he would cut out inspirational quotes from the newspaper and put a quote in each of his customer’s bag. Every night when he got home from work, he would ask his dad to help him cut out quotes from the newspaper. At the store the next day, he would place a quote in each customers’ bag. Well, it didn’t take long for this young man to be the most popular bagger in the store. Lines would form just to have him bag your groceries. In fact, one woman would frequent the store daily, not because she needed groceries, but because she wanted the inspirational quote.
