De-Clutter Your Life...

One important coaching principle that I talk with my clients about is the idea of de-cluttering your life. To make room for new things and even the dreams that we have, we often need to de-clutter our physical, emotional and mental environments. What do I mean? I am really talking about getting rid of the things that clutter our physical, emotional and mental space and keep us from being productive and moving forward with our goals and dreams. What is standing in the way of your dreams or projects? Could it be a messy or cluttered physical space? It is very difficult to work or be creative on top of your kitchen counter. It is also hard to move forward when you are bogged down mentally with too many distractions or you are just too physically tired or drained emotionally. I find that If you want to accomplish goals or dreams you have to make room for them in many areas of life.

Change Your Thinking & Your Life...

Many years ago, James Allen wrote the very popular book, “As A Man Thinketh.” In this book he states, “All that a man achieves and all that he fails to achieve is the direct result of his own thoughts.” That’s a very powerful statement! According to Allen, where we are in life is in direct proportion to our thoughts. So if you have a question about your progress in life maybe you should ask yourself what are my thoughts like?

The Problem With Assumptions...

One of the things that can cause real problems in the area of communication and leadership is this thing called assumption. When we make an assumption, we jump to form a conclusion about someone or something without solid evidence or proof. We all know that sometimes people and situations aren’t always what they appear to be. A few examples would be:

1. We see a disheveled person and we assume they are homeless or a drunkard.
2. We see a person without a wedding ring on and assume they are single or divorced.
3. People from the North are unfriendly.
4. All Southerners lack intelligence.

Moving Past Extreme Thinking...

Many of the clients I deal with struggle with what I call “extreme thinking.” It is really the kind of thinking that basically divides life up into extremes. It is an “all or nothing” “black or white” approach to life. The problem with extreme thinking or “polarized” thinking is that possibilities become very limited.

I will use an example in the realm of dieting because most women can relate to this example. Janie is on a diet and has done pretty well for three days and then she slips and eats a piece of cake. She has “fallen off the horse” so to speak. Rather than admitting that she cheated and getting back on the diet for the rest of the day, she binges the rest of the afternoon. She believes she blew it so she might as well forget it and just indulge. The next day she feels so bad about herself that she decides to forget the diet altogether. Sound familiar?

Get Your Life Back Now...

It seems most very day when you turn on the news there is some kind of bad news.  Our economy seems out of control and so do people.  Just a few days ago, in a town not too far from me, a man walks into a nursing home and kills eight elderly people.  Who does those kinds of things and what has gone wrong with our world?  It’s one thing to have anger and even rage and quite another to let that anger and rage get so out of control that innocent lives are destroyed.
